Genesee Valley Parent Magazine was honored with six awesome awards at the Editorial and Design Competition this past weekend! Parenting Publications of America (PPA) gave out over 365 Editorial and Design Competition awards to 72 parenting newspapers and magazines at a banquet on March 5, 2011, the climax of the three-day PPA Annual Convention in Arlington, VA. PPA’s Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers and designers at member publications. A panel of 25 judges from the University of Missouri School of Journalism reviewed 915 entries from 75 publications to choose the winners in each category.

Genesee Valley Parent Magazine was recognized for editorial and design excellence in the following categories:
* Gold award for the editorial in our Special Parent Section (featured in our September 2010 issue)
* Silver award for our monthly calendar of events
* Silver award for the design of our Special Parent Section (featured in our September 2010 issue)
* Bronze award for General Excellence for our 2010 Rochester Baby Guide annual publication
* Bronze award for design of our 2010 Rochester Baby Guide annual publication
* Bronze award for overall editorial writing

Judges comments about our winning entries included:

“Special Parent” Editorial – Gold Award
“A strong combination of tips and features that are well written and well edited. Stories are creative, including a feature on how to introduce art to special needs children.”

“Special Parent” Design – Bronze Award
“This special section uses big, bold headlines, lots of photos and a good dose of white space to give this section the same important feel as the rest of the magazine. The importance of the section is hyped even more by the cover and table of contents, which incorporates many of the same elements as the magazine’s traditional cover while still retaining its identity as a special section.”

Calendar of Events – Silver Award
“Readers of the Genesee Valley Parent Magazine won’t have any trouble learning what activities and events are being staged in their area thanks to the strong organization of this section. The information is consistent and concise, with clearly marked free events. Listings include prices, phone numbers and websites – much appreciated content.”

Overall Writing – Bronze Award
“The Violence at Home articled is a dark, important piece that many magazines would not have attempted. The Special Parent insert was well-executed.”

Rochester Baby Guide 2010, General Excellence – Bronze Award
“A lively table of contents tells you that you have a treat in store, and this section is a real pleaser from the Baby Bits briefs through the comprehensive resource guide. Especially interesting was a feature on pre-baby vacations and how to communicate with your baby through music.”
